The New Prius Family

Toyota is expanding the Prius line and along with this they have started an advertising campaign around what is the plural of Prius. They have given the public the chance to vote for what they think the multiple Prius should be called. Over the next two years Toyota will release 3 new models that will wear the Prius badge.

The first new Prius model to be released will be the Prius V, which is being described as a family crossover. The Prius V will seat 5 passengers; but have 50% more space than the standard Prius. It will look more like a station wagon than the original Prius. This new model is scheduled to go on sale this summer.

The Prius c Concept vehicle was shown at the Detroit Auto Show and is slated to be released for sale in 2012. The Prius c is designed for city driving and its fuel efficiency is well beyond the 50 miles per gallon the current Prius gets. The sporty look of this vehicle was designed to draw younger consumers to the Prius line.

The Plug-In Prius has been talked about for awhile now. This Prius is designed to go 13 miles on electric power at speeds up to 60 miles per hour before it switches to gasoline. It is slated to be sold in early 2012. Toyota believes the Plug-In Prius will be a big success in California; where almost 30% of all new Prius are sold.

Toyota believes that consumers will respond well to the expanded Prius line and analysts agree. The standard Prius alone outsold the entire Acura and Infiniti brands last year. The Prius is an incredibly dominant vehicle. Toyota has continued to dominate the hybrid market; and though they are facing stiff competition, the expansion of the Prius line should help them maintain their hold on the hybrid market.

So, now that the Prius line is expanding what is the plural of Prius? Toyota's voting campaign gives the options of Prii, Priuses, Prium, Prien or Prius. The voting has been going on for about a month now and already Toyota has received over 47,000 votes on their Facebook fan page. Prii is currently first with 40% of the votes. Priuses comes in second with 27% followed by Prius, 15%; Prium, 11%; and Prien, 8%. The voting ends February 20th and Toyota promises to use the winning name in its official press releases about the Prius and its new family.

So why the sudden release of so many Prius family members? Toyota has an ambitious goal; to make Prius its top-selling line of vehicles by 2020. With the rising gas prices, the public's concern over the environment and the US governments increasing pressure on automakers to increase fuel efficiency the possibility of Toyota achieving this goal is very real. In 2010 Toyota sold about 150,000 Prius models in the US and was the number one selling vehicle in Japan. With an expansion of the Prius line there is no doubt that it could easily become the number one selling line of vehicles in the next 10 years.

Toyota Prius Hybrid Exterior and Interior Review

Exterior

The most important thing about the Toyota Prius to look at is the fact that driving this particular hybrid is a fashion statement all of its own. At least 57% of Prius owners seem to think that the fashion statement is a good one, and the exterior of the car only helps aid that argument. At first glance, the exterior lends the opinion that the Prius is a great car, and when you look closer, the Prius's exterior characteristics are quite intricate and outstanding.

Reviewers and experts alike have given the Prius fantastic rankings and scores just based on the Prius's exterior. Considering how sleek and stylish most hybrid cars look, being able to win them out for style has shown that the exterior must have some major kudos to turn that many heads.

First of all, the Toyota Prius is not at all a vehicle designed simply for one purpose. No, the Prius was definitely designed to impress its audience, as well as create its own fashion statement that is loud and visible. Like the Chevy Tahoe, another hybrid vehicle, the Prius's body is designed to reduce wind resistance, allowing the car to move faster and smoother on the road. A particular design, the Kammback design, was developed to help reduce air resistance and the very shape of the car has a low coefficient drag and is functionally and aesthetically pleasing.

Oddly enough, the Toyota Prius has actually prompted its own jargon, such as the rise of "Prius politics," wherein a driver often purchases a hybrid car so that they can show off. The car's exterior is incredibly unique and innovative, and so the Prius is easily identifiable by the style and make of the vehicle, and not nearly as much for the fuel-efficiency that the vehicle boats. Granted, the Prius is still a green car, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, so drivers who buy the Prius are not only making a fashion statement, but are also helping to make the country more eco-friendly.

In dealing with hybrids, tires are just as important as the rest of the vehicle, and in the case of the Prius, this is no different. The tires used on the Prius are much better at reducing friction while on the road, given a lower rolling resistance. Thankfully, not only are the tires better with resistance, but they also have a firmer grip on the road, making driving much safer and easier to handle.

Who is the Prius for? The Toyota Prius is for the driver interested in contributing to the reduction of environmental issues. Yet, for the majority of Prius drivers, this vehicle is still a fashion status, and the Prius can be seen as a badge of social ranking as well. In fact, most know that Prius's are not cheap vehicles, but what sells the Prius even through the price tag is that the exterior just looks that good. If considering a Toyota Prius, the reasons you're probably doing so are for picking fuel-efficient and a stylish vehicle.

Interior

The basic construction of the Prius utilizes very lightweight materials, and the actually driving experience and the seating arrangement for the passengers is a great compliment to the car. The design for the car is that of a D-segment which means the Prius has plenty of room for driving and riding comfortably. In fact, the interior makes for a very pleasant and cosy ride.

The rear seats can deal with a 60:40 split or completely fold flat, making storage much easier in what seems like a smaller vehicle. In this car, luggage storage won't be problematic. The Prius's front seats are based on being of hip-point height to reduce stressful body positioning, enabling a much more comfortable ride. This height makes getting in and out of the car much easier and much more comfortable. I don't know about you, but I like being able to actually move around after I get into the car.

The Prius hybrid's interior design is based on being able to utilize a higher position to drive by. This particular positioning is better for the driver by enhancing visibility and comfort. The instrumentation and control panel in the interior give easier control over many of the features. Buttons and controls are all centralized right at the driver's fingertips around the steering wheel so that you don't have to stretch across the car anymore just to change the radio station. Even some of the engine's features are now controllable by the dashboard.

There is no mistaking that Toyota has given a great deal of time and consideration in order to create a comfortable and worthwhile control panel and interior. Many of the design features and technological benefits, such as being able to integrate the Bluetooth cell phone interface, make driving the Prius much safer, convenient and enjoyable experience.

Performance Mini Moto Parts

Ok, so starting with the larger performance mini moto parts. The largest part you could get for your mini moto is probably a big bore kit. This will increase the displacement of your mini moto and give you great power gains throughout the rev range. It is becoming cheaper and cheaper to buy these kits for your mini moto and they certainly give the greatest power gains for the money so these kits are highly recommended. However some mechanical knowledge may be required in order to fit one of these kits, it is basically putting a new engine in!

Once you've got a big bore kit for your mini moto, you can start with some of the smaller mods in order to get the most out of your mini moto engine. I would now purchase a performance mini moto exhaust. These are great and if you get a good one you will see noticeable power increases, especially mid range and top end on your mini moto. In some cases these exhausts alone can add up to 10mph to your mini motos top speed and increase acceleration dramatically. Exhausts can be purchased for under £50 in many places on line, but if you are looking for a top quality exhaust system which is going to benefit you the most then it may be worth looking into some slightly more expensive exhaust systems.

I would now go on to modify the carburettor and air intake on your mini moto, I find these very restrictive on most mini motos and if this area of the mini moto is modified correctly you wont be able to believe the power gains and feel of your mini moto. Get yourself an upgraded performance carburettor. Performance big bore carburettors (usually around 57mm) will let your engine breathe and really let it perform how it wants to. If you combine this with a performance air filter, upgraded jets and tune it all up correctly the performance increases will be amazing. Your mini moto will feel like a new bike which will rev freely and be a lot quicker than the standard bike.

Now you have added the larger performance mini moto parts it is time to fine tune your mini moto and get the last dribbles of performance out of your engine.

After adding the above modification I would definitely now go on to improve the ignition system, firstly by replacing the spark plug with a high performance spark plug. I would recommend NGK spark plugs, and also by changing the changing the spark plug cap to an NGK one. This will help to stop your mini moto ignition system begin burnt out by the extra power increases. It would also be a good idea to change the lead and coil in order to cope with the power gains.

Also it may be an idea to get an uprated chain, one which will be able to cope with the power increases you have put the bike through. The reason I say this is because I have experience of the weaker chains found on most Chinese mini motos snapping on numerous occasions as they are just not tough enough to cope.

There are many performance mini moto parts which can be added to do with the clutch and gearing of the mini moto, this will ensure that power is always delivered efficiently when you need it. Try adding a rocket key to your mini moto, this is a very cheap modification but will make the bikes timing noticeably better, improving the speed at which the bike pulls away and its acceleration through the low range.

One problem with Chinese mini motos especially is the clutches on these bikes are not up to hard use. You will find clutches burning out very often and power gains being significantly less as the clutch can not cope. This is why I would highly recommend buying a heavy duty performance clutch. You will find the power is delivered faster and smoother than with a standard clutch and you will not need to replace it half as many times.

If you are racing your mini moto, or want to get better acceleration rather than top end or vice versa then you need to change the gearing of the mini moto. This is done by changing to different sized sprockets on the back and front. A larger sprocket on the back or front will decrease acceleration but increase top speed, whereas a smaller sprocket on the back or the front will increase acceleration but you will suffer top end. Depending on how you want the mini moto to ride will affect the sprockets which are used on the bike.

Now you have made these changes to your mini moto you will feel an enormous increase in power, speed and pleasure of riding. Remember though to always ride on private land and to wear safety equipment.

Kayak Transport and Carriers

Ok, you did your homework and got the right kayak - now you need to make another decision. How are you going to transport your new kayak?

Some kayaks are heavy and cumbersome - especially rigged fishing kayaks. You'll need to put some thought into what will be the best transport method for you, your kayak, and your vehicle. Various vehicles will create different situations to contend with. For instance, if you have a very tall vehicle it may not be practical for you to load your kayak on the roof - maybe a trailer is the way to go, or a Hullavator. Maybe you have a health problem or an injury that will prevent you from lifting a kayak. Or maybe you just don't feel like lifting a 60+ lb kayak over your head. All of these issues can be addressed.

Let's go over some of the different methods to transport your kayak(s).

Transport Methods

Rack Systems

Most kayak transport needs can be satisfied by adding an after-market rack system. A rack system includes the bars and feet (adapters) that attach the system to your particular vehicle. The bars can be used alone or they can serve as the base for additional kayak carriers and accessories. The most widely used systems are made by Thule and Yakima. These types of racks offer the most weight capacity and are the safest way to transport kayaks on a vehicle.

Factory Racks

Many vehicles come with factory bars (usually the flat oblong shaped ones) and these can work fine to transport your kayak and can usually be fitted with most kayak carriers, but they lack the carrying capacity and long term strength of a good after-market rack system. So if you need to carry multiple kayaks or even one heavy single kayak, investing in a good rack system will be your best option.

Foam Blocks

This method is kind of like the duct tape approach to kayak transport. With this system the foam blocks are placed on the roof of the car and the kayak is strapped down sandwiching the foam between the roof and the kayak. The reason foam blocks are so popular is that they are a very economical transport system. However, care needs to be taken to make sure the kayak is secured properly to prevent any problems and or damage to your kayak and/or vehicle.

foamblock

Car with with foam block carrier system

Trailers: This is fast becoming a popular alternative for individuals who are tired of lifting or for the family that needs an easy way to haul the fleet. Many trailers are well made, perfect for kayaks, and in some cases can be close to cost of an aftermarket rack system. We recommend Trailex Trailers.

Trailex makes a single kayak version that is light enough to unhook and use as a dolly to get right up to the water. For those who want to carry more than one kayak they also make multi-kayak trailers.

Rack Accessories

Rack Pads

Rack Pads were originally designed for surfboards but work well for kayaks. The pads wrap around your factory or after-market bars and are held in place by Velcro straps. Rack pads are a very good choice if you transport you kayak face down (the seat area facing the roof), by carrying face down you are placing the load on the gunwales (the strongest part of the kayak) and it is the way many kayak companies recommend to carry the kayak to prevent distorting or damaging the hull.

Pros: Like foam blocks, it can be a very economical set up, especially if you already have bars on your vehicle. Unlike foam blocks rack pads can't fly off the vehicle.

Cons: Pads usually don't have a lot of cushion and can dent some kayaks if transported with the hull down or if you over tighten the tie-down straps.

Cradles and Saddles: A very popular way to carry a kayak designed to carry the kayak right side up (just like it is on the water). Some examples of these are the Thule Set-To-Go and the Malone Seawing.

Pros: These tend to keep kayak in place and protect the hull from damage. These systems usually work well with other pieces of equipment that aid in getting your kayak on your vehicle like rollers and glide pads (we will discuss these later).

Cons: These set-ups are designed to transport your kayak right side up, not the ideal way to avoid distortion, but with care this will not be an issue. Also, if you are going to transport 2 kayaks, cradles do limit the usable space on your rack bars.

J-Carriers: These work by carrying your kayak(s) on their side in J-shaped racks.

Pros: J-carriers work well to protect the kayak hull from damage when tightening the straps. They will also maximize your roof space to allow for extra kayaks or other accessories.

Cons: It can be tough to maneuver the kayak on top of your vehicle and into the side position of the J-carrier, especially if your vehicle is tall. Also, be careful in parking garages as the added height could be a problem. Some examples of J-carriers are: Thule Hullaport and the Malone Autoloader.

Vehicle types

Cars

Cars with short roofs can be a challenge - especially 2-door cars. The shorter the distance between the straps/bars the less secure the system will be. Always, use bow and stern lines when transporting by car or any vehicle with a short roof span - a favorite of ours is the Thule Quickdraw.

While foam blocks will work, we strongly recommend putting a rack system on your car - this will make life easier, protect the roof of your car, and leave you more room for other accessories & gear. Most rack manufacturers make special rack adapters for 2 door cars with shorter roofs. Both Thule and Yakima make good system for cars.

SUV's and Mini Vans

The longer roof frame of an SUV or a Mini Van does give you some advantages over cars, but sometime the added height of an SUV can make getting your kayak on top a little harder. Most SUV's come with factory racks that work well to receive most kayak carriers and transport accessories. Factory racks systems do have weight limits, but most can handle 1 or 2 medium to light weight kayaks without a problem.

A popular way to transport two kayaks with a factory system is to transport one in a J-type carrier and the other flat or face down on the bars. You can really maximize space by using two J-Carriers.

Of course, adding a quality rack system to a SUV or Mini Van will offer the most room for accessories and carrying capacity. Note: It's OK if the bars extend out past the roof. According to the law, they can extend as wide as your side-view mirrors. On tall vehicles this works well, on shorter ones make sure you won't be hitting your head on the ends of the bars when you enter or exit the vehicle.

Pickup Trucks

Nothing is easier than strapping a kayak into the bed of a pickup and hitting the road. If the kayak is hanging over the end of your tailgate you must hang a flag on it for safety. Another option which makes this method of transport safer and more practical is a bed extender. An extender is a device that plugs into a standard 2- hitch mount and will give you up to 4' more of support under your kayak. (An extender can also be reconfigured to support your kayak over the bed, with one end resting on the cab roof and the other on the extender in the vertical position.)

Helpers & Load Assist Devices

No matter what system you are using you will still have to physically set the kayak into or onto it. This may seem difficult and awkward at first, but you will find that it will get easier with repetition and ultimately you will find what works best for you and your situation. But a little help doesn't hurt. So here is a list of products that can help make bearing the weight a little easier.

Thule Hydro Glide: helps when loading your kayak from one end of your vehicle and also acts to hold the kayak during transport. The kayak slides easily on felt covered pads.

Thule Roller Coaster: a roller attached to a set of saddles that allows you to push the kayak up onto the roof from the rear of the vehicle.

Loading Bars: Thule as well other companies make a bar that extends out so you can lift one end of the kayak on the bar and then lift the other side onto your rack. Thule makes the Outrigger

Lift Assist Accessories: Companies now make accessories to help you get your kayak unto your roof. One such product is the Hullavator by Thule, this hydraulic assist rack folds down the side of the vehicle where the kayak is loaded at waist height and the whole thing folds back onto the roof with the aid of mechanical assistance - Nice! We've had many customers tell us that without this system they wouldn't have been able to continue kayaking because of physical limitations brought on by age or injury. Sure it's expensive, but worth every penny.

Roller Loader: This little device works to help you get your kayak up on your vehicle. It basically is a dolly that suctions on to the back of your vehicle and you just roll the kayak on or off.

A very low-tech option that works particularly well with mini-vans, SUV's and station wagons is a rubber backed bathmat. Just to place the mat (with rubber backing down - so it won't slide) on the rear of the vehicle and place one end of the kayak on the mat and slide onto the rack. Here is a video clip of a kayak being loaded using a bathroom mat.

Tips for Transport:

Always give the kayak a good push and pull before driving away to make sure you are secure. As a general rule if you can rock the vehicle without the kayak shifting on its perch than you are fine. If the kayak is sliding back and forth on the bars or in the carriers than you need to go back and tighten the straps.

If using straps with auto-lock buckles, always put a half hitch in the strapping after tying down to insure that even if the buckle loosens the strap will not come lose.

If using ratchet style tie downs it is very easy to over-tighten and do damage to the kayak. So make sure that the kayak is snug, but don't go overboard.

When transporting in a flat bed pickup don't choose places on the kayak to fasten to that can fail - like the handles. We recommend passing the straps through the scupper holes of the kayak and tying that off in the bed of the truck.

Some cars roof areas can compress/dent in when using foam blocks, these dents usually pop back out. Always try to place foam blocks on the strongest part of the roof (this will be the areas closer to the front and rear windows)

Also, if you find that some part of your kayak is making contact with the roof after you tighten it down then placing a piece of rug or padding there is a good idea to protect the car from scratching.

Racks and kayaks will decrease your vehicles MPG. If you are not using your racks on a regular basis, it may be a good idea to remove them. Quality rack systems, such as those made by Thule and Yakima are often as easy to remove with the turn of a key. (Bars can even be kept in the vehicle so they remain handy, but won't be affecting your mileage)

With the right equipment and techniques, loading, transporting, and unloading your kayak is very manageable.

Shootout At Lokhandwala - Watchable? Maybe Once

We review only select movies in these columns. We reviewed 300 and left out run of the mill pictures like Ta Ra Rum Pum despite their high profile star casts. A movie has to be worthy of your attention and time. It is sad that the majority of the flicks that have hit the screens in the last month or two do not fit the bill. So what makes Shootout at Lokhandwala stand out?

Primarily, three points:

The movie is based on a true story. (This, however, does not mean that the entire movie is a true story. The incident did take place but the movie is essentially a 'filmi' version of the episode).

The movie has a strong Chandigarh connection in Maya bhai, the main protagonist. Maya's character is based on the real life Mayas Dolas, a young engineering graduate who hailed from Pinjore, near here.

The movie sends out a strong message, which may sound a trifle outdated to the majority of the youth today: You may shake a leg here and there, indulge in a little mumbo-jumbo on your own but when it comes to watching your interests, nobody does it better than your parents.

Shootout is directed by Apoorva Lakhia -- a new age director willing to experiment with new genres and new methods of story-telling. Lakhia has chosen to limit the movie to two hours and to his credit he manages to retain his grip over the plot. The central theme remains in focus over the racy two hours. Secondly, Lakhia has successfully sidetracked from taking any sides in what essentially is a cops versus gangsters affair. The movie strives to simply present each side of the story instead of passing any judgements.

Shootout revolves around an encounter between a gang of mobsters and the Mumbai police that took place in the summer of 1991. The controversial incident is stated to be the biggest of its kind to be covered live on national television. Lakhia pieces together the story using the flashback technique.

The movie unfolds with ACP AA Khan (played by Sanjay Dutt), inspectors Kaviraj Patil (Suniel Shetty) and Javed Shaikh (Arbaaz Khan) of the Mumbai Police ATS (a special anti-terrorism squad modeled on the LAPD SWAT) recounting the incidents leading up to the encounter, to private prosecutor Dhingra (played by Amitabh Bachhan). Incidentally, the real life ACP AK Khan, who lead the squad in the real encounter also figures in the movie playing the role of Police Commissioner, Mumbai Police.

On the gangsters side, the lead roles are essayed by Vivek Oberoi (Maya), Tushar Kapur(Maya's side kick Dilip Buwa) and their three colleagues.

The movie successfully delves into the lives and minds of cops and the gangsters. Lakhia has portrayed the shenanigans of the cops versus gangsters game highlighting the alleged politicians-criminals-police nexus. The film shows the excesses committed by the gangsters in running their extortion rackets. It also depicts the alleged association between the criminals and the police (The D-company chief, based in Dubai at that time, is shown calling up ACP Khan to give him the exact address of the Lokhandwala flat where the trigger happy Maya and his gang members are waiting for builder Wadhwani).

The movie fails largely due to the demands of commercialism. Lakhia and Sanjay Gupta (the producer) has kept the script tight. However, a series of song and dance sequences appear totally out of place. A rap number 'Aye Ganpat' sung by Mika sounds good.

The movie is full of noise, blood, violence, and guns. In this, Lakhia has tried to walk the territory charted out by Quentin Tarantino with Reservoir Dogs. Sadly, here he fails miserably. Shootout is a loud film all through. Blame it on commercialism, but Lakhia has failed to realize the importance of an interplay between silence and sound. Perhaps, a cue from 'Satya' or 'Parinda' could have helped.

Among the actors, Vivek Oberoi looks convincing. Maya comes across as sinister, ruthless, fearless and tempestuous. Whereas Rohit Roy (Fattu), Shabbir Ahluwalia( RC) and Aditya Lakhia (Doubling) are good, Tusshar Kapoor looks out of place. You cannot point anything really wrong with Sanjay Dutt's performace, but one gets a feeling he could have looked better playing a gang leader instead of a cop.

Sunil Shetty looks solid. Amitabh Bachhan, however, seems to be spreading himself too thin with a series of releases one after the other. Bachhan disappoints in Shootout.

The female actors have little to do in the movie. Amrita Singh (as Maya's mom) looks good. Dia Mirza does not sound like a journalist. Neha Dhupia and Arti Chhabria are disappointing.

Our verdict: Watchable, but only once. And that too if you have time to spare.

Acura - The First In Japanese Luxury

History

In 1986, Honda launched into the luxury market with the Acura, marketing these vehicles in the US, Canadian and Hong Kong markets. It was the first Japanese brand to appear on the luxury market. Styles were limited really to the Legend and the Integra, the Legend being a sedan while the Integra came in either a sporty coupe or a sedan. Acura built on Honda's reputation for reliability and low cost for the quality was instantly successful and while it lacks the glitter of luxury European models, there is no doubt that the Acura is packed with luxury features and desired performance. In the early 1990s, Honda introduced the NSX sports car to its Acura line up. It stayed true to Honda's reputation and matched its competitors while undercutting their prices. During the 1990s, the Acura name experienced difficulties as Honda tried to determine and establish the image it wanted to project for this line with renamed models, and a renamed version of a competitor's SUV. It tried to meet rising consumer interest too quickly.

In the 21st century, however, Acura has buckled down and revamped its range of available products to meet the variety of consumer interests. The MDX appeared in 2001 and is Acura's answer to the Luxury SUV, featuring family friendly amenities. In 2002, the RSX sport coupe was introduced to replace the Integra and in 2004, the TSX an entry level sports sedan was added to the Acura fleet. It also redesigned the midsize TL sedan, Acura's most popular fleet model and in 2005, redesigned its RL flagship model

Current Fleet

Acura's current fleet consists of six models the RL, Acura's flagship model is a 5 passenger midsize luxury sedan, the TL is a mid-sized sport sedan also featuring space for five passengers, followed by the TSX, a five passenger mid-sized sedan classified as near luxury. Acura also produces the RSX and the NSX a 4 and 2 passenger sport coupe and car respectively. For those customers who love Honda and luxury and are looking for a sport utility vehicle, Acura's fleet includes the MDX a seven passenger luxury SUV.

The Future of Acura

In 2008, Honda plans to introduce the Acura fleet to its native country, Japan. Future model concepts include the advanced sports car; this model is a replacement though not directly of the 1990s NSX. New features include a front sitting engine, and a non-aluminum body, totally different from its predecessor. It also features a v-10 engine and all wheel drive with rear drive bias. This new design is low to the ground and wide with a 108.8-inch wheelbase anchored by a 19-inch front and 20-inch rear performance tires for stability and control. This advanced sports car concept if full of sweeping curves and dynamic lines creating a mouthwateringly exotic looking sports car at a still very attractive price. Look for this model to arrive in showrooms in the 2009 model year.

The advanced concept in Acura's luxury sedan, modern, yet classical, sophisticated and edgy with an air of mystery this advanced concept luxury sedan design takes your breath away. Like most luxury models this concept car sits low to the ground anchored by large 22-inch front and 23-inch rear tires, the large proportions scream power and the tinted glass roof offers a panoramic view of the world while still giving you privacy and shade. This sedan's impressive 79.5-inch width is emphasized by low positioned narrow headlights and a large aluminum grill. The rear of the advanced sedan concept is equally impressive featuring a flush mounted rear bumper, integrated stop lamp, taillights that sit on the outer edge of the bumper to draw attention to the wide, low appearance giving it a touch of performance style. This isn't your average luxury sedan it screams power while offering the sleek lines one expects of luxury currently there is no release information on when we can expect to see this model in our show rooms.

For those of us who want luxury at affordable prices, the options provided by Acura give us the flexibility to meet our concept of luxury. No matter whether you're looking for the sophistication of a sedan, the edge of a luxury sports car, or the power of a sport utility vehicle, Acura has something for everyone. The Acura fleet backed by Honda's stellar reputation of quality, dependability and affordability makes Acura a leader in affordable luxury.

Can a Vegan Detox Improve Your Health?

Body cleanses or detoxes are popular treatments within alternative medicine. Advocates maintain that a special diet of a limited duration will remove accumulated toxins and other unwanted substances from the body. As such, they see regular cleanses as providing desirable effects or health benefits. The belief is that our modern lifestyle, with its stresses, strains, unhealthy food choices, lack of exercise and habits such as smoking all contribute to a lack of well-being.

There are various cleanses and diets to choose among. A vegan detox is one possibility. Advocates claim it helps our body eliminate the toxins and therefore shift the scales in favour of good health.

Veganism Explained

A vegan detox is rooted in veganism, which for some people is a permanent way of eating and living. Before discussing the vegan detox, it is good to understand what veganism is all about.

Veganism is a subset of vegetarianism, but with greater restrictions. Vegans eat or use no animal products. Vegetarians, for example, might consume cheese, eggs, butter, milk, cottage cheese and yogurt. Vegans do not. Vegans also do not use animal products in clothing or for other purposes.

If a temporary vegan detox is what interests you, then you have no need to go the length of eliminating leather, suede, and other similar products from your life.

How Much Can a Vegan Detox Promote Health?

By definition, detoxification is a process in which you remove environmental pollutants from your body's system. These pollutants enter our bodies in the foods we eat, through the use of alcohol and drugs, through exposure to environmental hazards and through breathing in fumes and pollutants in the air.

Vegans and people who follow the raw food diet are likely to tell you that the benefits of a temporary cleanse or detox are limited. They insist that the very idea that a simple diet can detoxify the entire body in a few days or a couple of weeks is impossible. The truth us that our bodies already have the capacity to repair, restore and regenerate tissues as well as eliminating toxins.

Although they agree that a detox diet might speed this process up a wee bit, this temporary diet cannot undo a lifetime of damage or even years of damage. Similarly, it is not especially helpful to slightly speed up the removal of toxins that would have moved through the system with forty-eight hours anyway.

However, advocates explain that a detox diet can be helpful if maintained for longer periods of time -- at least a month, ideally more.

If you continue this way of eating for several months, advocates state that you will start to experience optimal benefits. You may feel some improvement after a few days, but a few months down the road, you will experience a heightened feeling of well-being, improvement in any pre-existing diseases or illnesses and increased mental alertness.

The Real Benefit: Improved Nutrition

Vegans point out that the real health advantages to a vegan diet do not stem from the cleanse or the detox, but rather because you have stopped eating unhealthy foods and are now eating foods that are in keeping with Nature's plan for us. The improved nutrition leads to more stable blood sugar levels, better cholesterol levels and other indicators that suggest good health.

A Sample Vegan Detox

If you choose to try a vegan detox, you will have several choices at your disposal. The best approach is to acquire a book written by a respected writer and expert on the topic.

If you do it on your own, there are a few basic rules to keep in mind.

First and foremost, you consume no animals products while you are on a vegan detox. This means no fish, seafood, meat, poultry, dairy, cheese, eggs, honey, chicken bouillon cubes, etc. Most vegans would advise you to avoid refined carbohydrates as well --- meaning sugars (both white and brown), white flour, white rice and so on.

You are advised to eat whole grains. You want foods that are as low on the glycaemic index as you can find. Fruits are great, especially those with stones. You can also eat seeds such as pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. These are high in nutritional value.

In addition to eliminating sugar, it is also advisable to stop consuming caffeine and alcohol. These substances are plant products, but they hinder digestion and sleep patterns. Should you consume sugar, alcohol or caffeine during your detox, these substances are likely to undo the benefits you would otherwise experience.

Caffeine is found in coffee, black and green teas, some soft drinks and certain non-prescription medications sold over the counter.

Other variations on the vegan detox diet are the vegan raw food diet or the fruitarian diet.

Choosing the Right Auto Loan Online

Buying a new car or a used car need not give you headaches anymore. Getting auto loans has become easy; you can now choose from online auto loan lending networks or get an auto loan from your car dealer. And there are many auto loan options available to choose from.

The competition to provide auto loans has boiled down to better, and faster, deals for car loan borrowers. So if you apply for an auto loan today you can probably drive home in your dream machine by the evening!

Choosing the correct auto loan requires some homework on your part - you should be willing to do some research. Not that it is difficult; you can easily do it on the Internet.

First and foremost, you need to evaluate your credit status. You need to ascertain how much of a car loan you can afford. This is important before deciding on to the car to buy. Auto loans require monthly payments, so it should be an amount that fits into your monthly budget. Many auto loan sites have auto loan calculators which can give an idea as to how much your auto loan is going to cost you each month. Once you have worked this out, you can get ready to apply for your auto loan.

Again, the Internet is a great help here. There are thousands of auto loan sites where you can apply for an auto loan online. Completing those forms is usually a breeze: just fill in a few fields and click on the 'Submit' button!

Generally the online lenders offer interest rates 1-2 per cent lower than that offered by the auto dealers. That money saved can be used to bear the other costs associated with buying your car.

Online auto loan forms ask for your basic banking details, your job status, and residence proof. Online applications are processed immediately by lenders in the network near to your place of residence. Approvals usually take less than an hour, and more important, on most sites this is a free service. Better still, an approval does not put any obligations on you about taking a loan from that lender.

If you have a clean credit status and a co-signer, then consider your loan semi-approved! The good thing about auto loans is that you can get one even if you have a less than perfect credit history. Most auto loan lenders offer bad credit auto loans. However, some lenders may charge you higher interest rates and a larger down payment because of your bad credit status. Some lenders also restrict the choice of cars models if you have a bad credit status.

Once the loan is approved, you will get loan offers from the lenders and you can choose the loan that you want.

The main criteria for choosing an auto loan should be the rate of interest and the loan period. The loan period for an auto loan is usually three to five years. You can ask for a longer period on your auto loan, say, seven years. But it is always better to repay the loan within a shorter period; that will put a lower interest burden on you. You must also find out from the lender if they allow faster repayment of auto loans without penalty charges. If they do, you can opt to repay the loans faster a few months later (depending on your income) and save on the loan charges.

Auto loans are available for new and used cars. Usually, the loan charges on used car loans are higher than that for new car loans. Research the various auto loan options available and always read the fine print of the loan agreement before you decide on your auto loan.

Rare earth elements: Geological distribution

' Rare Earth elements ' are a group of 17 elements present in the periodic table (15 Lanthanoids, Scandium and Yttrium). Scandium and Yttrium are chemically similar and present in the same ores as Lanthanoids.

These are abundant in the Earth (except Promethium). Cerium is such as copper, the most spacious 25th (68 parts per million) element. These reserves are spread, rather than found in clusters and marketable varieties are called ' the minerals of the rare earth '. Their name came into being thanks to the scarcity of these minerals. Gadolinite was the first connection in Sweden discovered by Arrhenius, a professor at the University.

In 1803, another rare earth-element ' Served ' was discovered. It was soon revealed that the substance consisted of other elements within it.

In 1839, the elements were separated from the compound and by 1842; four more elements was discovered. Now, four elements were Earth-Yttrium, Cerium, lanthanum known to exist, Erbium and Terbium Didymium,. Soon a new mineral discovered, with more elements within it.

The ingredients were found by means of x-ray diffraction. 25 rare earth elements were presumed to exist with an undiscovered chemical element present in them. Soon, the ion exchange method was developed and extraction of these metals was more efficient.

The 17 rare earth elements include:

-Scandium
-Yttrium
-Lanthanum
-Cerium
-Praseodymium
-Neodymium
-Promethium
-Samarium
-Europium
-Gadolinium
-Terbium
-Dysprosium
-Holmium
-Erbium
-Thulium
-Ytterbium
-Lutetium

They are either named after the discover scientist or the location where they are first found.

Cerium is usually found with Monazite and is found in large quantities. Yttrium is found with phosphates and is relatively rare. It is primarily found in South China. Gadolinite and Xenotime, among others, are common minerals that contain Yttrium. Major ores of Cerium include Bastnaesite (California, China) and Loparite (Russia). Deposits of earth minerals are present on the seabed also known.

Most rare earth elements were produced in India and Brazil, before deposits were found in Africa and California. China is currently the largest producer. Thanks to the increased demand for minerals and chance of reserves be exhausting, that China exports has fallen. Other countries are working to meet the needs of the population. Recycling of metals is examined as prices mount.

Extracting, metal recycling, disposal of toxic waste and the acids used in refining can be extremely dangerous and can lead to diseases such as leukemia (in Malaysia). Countries time takeoff from extraction to prevent these side effects (e.g. China). Birth defects have also occurred due to the fact that the radioactive ores can be.

China, whose rare earth industry has accelerated in recent decades, recently became a part of this industry because it is better for valuable objects in comparison with others. Thanks to domestic demand, China will slow down export to 130-140,000 tonnes instead of 129,000 tonnes in 2009 (total 132,000 used).

Rare earth metals are sold in private markets and so it is difficult to check their prices. However, people are now taking the purity of the metal that they need to give them the price.

Why an Inflatable Kayak Versus a Rigid Kayak?

Why Choose an Inflatable Kayak versus a Rigid Kayak?

Find out why more people are choosing an inflatable kayak as opposed to a rigid kayak than ever before. In this article we hope to answer the question; why an Inflatable Kayak?

Here are some good reasons why more people are choosing a portable kayak:

1. They don't want the hassle or the worry of having to hoist their kayak up and tying it securely to their car's roof rack.

2. They like the fact of how easy inflatable kayaks are to store. They can store them in a carry on storage bag and keep it in the trunk of their car or in a closet at their home, taking up very little space. Great if you live in a townhouse, condo or apartment.

3. If they travel, they like the fact they can bring their portable kayak with them, even take them on an airplane.

4. They like the fact how easy they are to maintain: let it dry, then fold it up and put it away.

5. They like that they can go kayaking in a moment's notice, from their car trunk to paddling in a moment's notice.

6. They like the fact of how affordable inflatable kayaks really are.

These are all good reasons for choosing an inflatable over a rigid kayak, but still more reasons why. So read on to learn more about how sturdy, safe, easy to set up, the many styles there are and finally how well they do versus a rigid kayak.

1. Inflatable kayaks are sturdier than ever imagine. These portable kayaks are made with durable material that you can hit with the sharp edge of a claw hammer. There are inflatable kayaks that are made with the same material used in boats the US Coast Guard and rescue crew use. You have quality kayaks and boats such as those made by Sea Eagle, Innova and Zodiac that offer nothing but the best materials to build their inflatable water crafts. For example, Sea Eagle Kayaks are constructed of tough 1,000 denier polyester supported high pressure fabric with quadruple thickness electronic welded seams. They test their kayaks by pounding them mercilessly with the sharp edge of a claw hammer and it had no effect nor did stabbing them with a screwdriver. Innova Kayaks are made of the same material used in Zodiac inflatable boats that the US Coast Guard uses. They are Made with rugged rubber coated 1200 denier Nitrylon, no PVC, on the outer hull and LitePack material on the interior. Innova test their kayaks mercilessly for puncture and abrasion wear and tear. You don't have to worry about bumping or scraping your kayaks at the docks.

2. When searching you'll find out there is a large range of sizes and styles of inflatable kayaks to choose from. You will find portable kayaks made for whitewater, touring, fishing, ocean surfing and more. There are kayaks that meet everyone's style, budget and skill level.

3. Easy to set up: An inflatable Kayak from most manufactures can be setup or put away in its bag, in less than 20 minutes - honest! Compared with folding kayaks, which also travels well, the setup time for portable kayaks are quicker and easier. Innova, Sea Eagle, Advance Element kayaks to name a few, set up in under 10 minutes and you won't need a degree in engineering, you can do it with just a manual foot bellow pump and a non complicated instructions manual.

Now Compared with rigid kayaks, in the time it takes to rig up your roof rack, tie down and then take down you kayak, you could have been out kayaking an hour ago.

4. They are safe with Easy Entry & Greater Stability:think stable and forgiving

Inflatable kayaks have multiple air chambers for redundancy which results in greater stability than rigid kayaks/boats. With more stability, unlike rigid kayaks, inflatable kayaks are very easy to get into from the water and less tendency to capsize in difficult paddling conditions.

5. Performance: when it comes to performance, inflatable kayaks can hold their own. In the 1997 San Juan Challenge an Innova Helios II, the only inflatable entry, won its section, averaging 3 knots. In a 25 knot headwind, it was faster by half a knot than the rigid sea kayaks in the race. In calm water, it was slower by half a knot than those same boats. So it will keep up with a rigid kayak; not necessarily outperform them every time but it will compete.

If you love to paddle, love to travel and looking for a convenient and affordable way to get out on the water, then an inflatable kayak is an excellent way to go. The great thing about inflatable kayaks is that there are lots of choices and no matter what your criteria, you are sure to find the portable kayak that suits your needs and skill level.

Point to Remember

One more thought. Inflatable boats and kayaks have been around for a while your Coast Guard and search and rescue people use them all the time. But like any boat or kayak you buy, common sense must always come into play when paddling any boat or kayak. Always wear a life vest when out on the water.

Audi - All Car History Volume 1

Audi traces its origins back to 1899 and August Horch. When Horch was forced out of the company he had founded, he started a new company in 1909 called Audi which was a Latin translation of Horch (in German: 'Listen'). From the start, the company's policy was to build cars mainly for the luxury category.

Since 1932 the Audi emblem has been the 'four rings', which represent its amalgamation with DKW, Horch and Wanderer to form Auto Union AG in Chemnitz, Germany. Audi supplied a wide range of passenger vehicles during the 1930s - from motorcycles to luxury saloon cars. Volkswagen bought the company in 1964. In the 1980s, Audi dominated world rally with the Audi Quattro, and has had huge success in the Le Mans 24 Hour with its R10 prototype racer.

Audi's progressive designs and groundbreaking technology combine to make cars which are innovative yet stylish. The current crop of production vehicles from the Audi A3 to the Audi R8 supercar has propelled Audi to record sales during the 21st century.

Audi have produced every kind of car imaginable: from executive cars such as the Audi A4 and Audi A6 to sports cars such as the Audi TT - from the Audi Q7 full size SUV to the Audi A2 super-mini and they show no signs of slowing down.

Will Congress Turn Our Pickup Trucks Into a Dinosaur?

Did you read in the paper last week I heard on the news that the Federal Government has mandated that Automobile manufactures are increasing the minimum gas mileage/ Congress has signed into law that the standards for gas mileage to be 35.5 for cars and trucks.

Now I drive a small truck, and that got me to thinking. I'd love to get that kind of mileage on mine. I drive a Dodge Dakota, you know the little brother of the big Dodge trucks.

Even though it's not a full size truck, it does have a full size appetite, at least to me. I get fifteen to seventeen miles a gallon.

There are a number of reasons by trucks are not as gas efficient as a car. The first is that generally they have larger engines, so by default, they generally burn more gas. Also a larger engine is heavier, so that cuts the gas mileage down also.

The second is higher wind resistance. Cars today are much more aerodynamic than trucks, and you also have wind resistance if you have an uncovered bed. But even if you have a cover on the bed of the truck, your gas mileage will not be equal to a car.

The third is the difference in the rear end. No, not the driver, (even though that may be a possibility,) but trucks are designed not only as transportation; many people use them to pull trailers, boats, camper's etc. Having a rear end designed for towing reducing fuel efficiency.

The last is that trucks are heavier than cars. Simple dynamics. It takes more energy to move a heavier weight.

Now to focus on normal trucks, like mine, or the ram, or the Ford 150, etc,

In 2012 the manufacturer has to have them get twenty five miles a gallon, but by 2016, they have to get 28.3.

What are they going to have to do to hit that mark?

I think that the makers are going to have to do the same things that they're doing to cars.

The problem with that is, we don't use our trucks like we use cars. Can you see a Prius towing a Boat? Or a Corolla pulling a 16 foot camper? No way.

I don't think Congress gets it. How can you go against simple physics? It takes a lot of energy to pull these, and to do so that vehicle has to be designed to haul that pay load.

When the makers get to that point, will they simply stop producing these vehicles? Will you have to spend thousands of dollars in modifications to simply haul your boat or Jet Ski?

This will also mean reduction in recreational items like campers, boats, and travel trailers. Will this also affect the people that make the supporting item, like skis, life jackets, etc.

Over 8 million light trucks are made each year. (And I'm not talking about SUV's. That's a lot of damage this will do to our economy.

Now there are exemptions, such as farm use, etc. But for us guys that fall outside, they are screwing with our quality of life, aren't they?

So they only option we will have is that we will NOT buy these abominations made to look like a honest hard working truck, and we'll have to keep our faithful trucks for a lot longer than we normally have been.

Of course, that also means that we'll be spending less, so we can focus more on the upkeep.

I have other blogs posted that has tips on how to extend the life of your vehicle, and that will be even more important for our trucks. Also check out the other article I did that will show you how to use a HHO generator to increase your gas mileage 20 to 40 percent, and has the added benefit of reducing emissions that can fail your vehicle. Guys, this bill has passed, and you need to let Congress know how damaging this can be.

What Should You Look For in an Auto Insurance Company?

What is a car insurance? What will an auto insurance cover?

Auto insurance companies cover you and your passengers in the event of an accident. But it is up to you to decide the level of cover you will get.

Will the damages to your property be covered by the company? Will all the passengers be covered or only your family? What if your daughter was driving your car?

What questions should you ask your auto insurance company when it comes to auto insurance? This article help you choose between the various insurance policies.

Types of auto insurance

Liability insurance, or third party insurance.

This is general the lowest form of insurance offered by an auto insurance company. This is the basic insurance, if you are involved in an accident, and it is proven to be your fault, the auto insurance company will pay damages to the other party.

The cover offered by the auto insurance company is usually set beforehand. These are the maximum amount the auto insurance company will pay in case of accident

For example the agent will agree on a $10000 coverage per person, (bodily injury) and/or $40000 coverage in bodily injury and/or $10000 in property damage per accident

You need to confirm with your auto insurance company what they will cover and what are the limits.

You might be offered a very low premium by some auto insurance company only to realize that your cover is minimal and unrealistic.

Collision and comprehensive coverage, comprehensive insurance and full comprehensive insurance

An auto insurance company will also offer you a comprehensive insurance, as the name indicates, you will be comprehensively covered.

In simple terms it means that if you are responsible for a collision the insurance company will pay for the repair of the vehicle.

But it is not so simple, an auto insurance company will almost always have the final say on what amount will be paid out, so if it is cheaper to give you market value for the car, then they will.

You might think that your car is worth $1000.00 but the real market value might be $500.00. This is not an uncommon scenario. So if the repair of your car are more than $500.00 then the auto insurance company will simply pay the book value of the car.

You must make sure that the insurance company is not in control of the market value of the car, normally organisations like the AA will give an impartial market value.

As with the third party insurance, the auto insurance company will almost certainly limit the amount that will be paid out, but in general terms, a comprehensive insurance will have higher limits.

Recreation Vehicle

A recreation vehicle needs its own insurance, a Recreation vehicle insurance is not the same as auto insurance.

You should not assume that because your car is comprehensively insured, so is your recreation vehicle.

Other Types of auto insurance

Medical (MedPay), Persona Injury protection (PIP) and no fault cover

This insurance will cover you and your passengers medical expenses in the event of a collision.

The no fault cover means that the auto insurance company will pay regardless of who is at fault. This give you the piece of mind that, at the very least, your family and friends are covered.

PIP is often a minimum requirement in some countries or states, ask your auto insurance company what the requirements are.

Uninsured/Underinsured motorists' coverage

This cover, (also sometimes a minimum requirement in some states), will cover you if the person at fault is not insured or is underinsured.

You must ask your auto insurance company what you will be charged in case of such a situation. Normally the auto insurance company should not charge you some extra premiums.

Rental reimbursement, towing and labour

Those 'extras' often given with a comprehensive insurance is often use by auto insurance companies as specials.

So in case your car is damaged the auto insurance company will pay for rental costs, (sometimes only for a few days).

The auto insurance company might also offer to pay for the towing of your vehicle, (not always included).

As always you should ask your auto insurance company what is included in the cover.

The legal requirements.

Most states, and most countries will require a certain level of cover, from full comprehensive car insurance to third party auto insurance.

In most cases it is up to you, the driver, to ensure that your auto insurance company offers you the minimum required. In most cases the insurance company, (the auto insurance company), is under no obligation to instruct you of the requirements.

But of course, a good auto insurance company will, (should?), try its outmost to advise you on the best deal for you.

Five Simple Tips to Improve the Gas Mileage in Your Chevy Full-Size Truck

With no apparent ceiling to the price of gas, consumers in this country and around the world are looking for any way to get the most mileage out of each gallon of gas. I own an '03 Chevy Silverado 1500, bought it used in '05 and the 5.3-liter v-8 is still running strong. We have a Prius for the family car, but there is no substitute for the V-8 power when it comes to hauling materials or towing equipment. The list below includes simple, inexpensive strategies to improve gas mileage in your full-size Chevy truck.

Regular maintenance will increase the gas mileage of any full-size truck

Changing the oil, checking tire pressure, replacing the air filter, all these routine items can have a significant impact on the gas mileage of your Chevy truck. An added benefit will be reduced repair costs and down time. While synthetic lubricants do work better, keeping the fluids full and changing them as needed will lower your fuel costs and help your truck to spend more time on the road and less with your mechanic.

Install a Tonneau bed cover or remove the tailgate

To increase your Chevy truck's gas mileage you must reduce the drag it creates as you are driving. Trucks are by nature not aerodynamic, but some changes can improve these characteristics and also add to the look of your truck. Adding a Camper will decrease drag, but also add significant weight. A better choice for increasing gas mileage is to use a bed cover. These are much less expensive than a camper, but still eliminate the additional drag caused by the tailgate. Another option is to remove the tailgate entirely, leaving it open or secured with a net. You can easily anchor any items in the bed with ratchet straps when needed, and you will reduce fuel costs whether you are hauling materials or just driving around.

Slow down to go further in your Chevy truck

As I previously mentioned all trucks suffer aerodynamic shortcomings, and this problem is magnified as speed increases. The same truck needs significantly more power to go 65mph than 45mph. Slowing down just 10mph can have a real effect on your fuel expenses. The same goes for "jack-rabbit" starts and speeding up to red lights. The faster you go, the more gas you burn, plain and simple. Once you put this into practice, you will probably also notice that you do not have to replace or repair other parts as frequently as well. Saving on brakes, transmission, and other drivetrain repairs directly translates to savings on your overall auto expenses.

Limit use of the Air Conditioning

One thing that will reduce the fuel mileage on your full-size Chevy truck is using the A/C. Although you may need it in the summer months, when the temperature drops you are much better off using the fan to cool off with outside air. The defroster will use the A/C system if the thermostat is set to cool, so flip it over to hot whenever you can to remove condensation from the windshield. Below 45mph, cracking the windows will let in a nice breeze, but at higher speeds, the additional drag will actually reduce your fuel efficiency. Driving down the highway it is preferable to use the A/C set on a moderate setting to rolling down the windows.

You cannot manage what you cannot Measure

Using the gas gauge and the odometer is iffy at best, to keep track of your fuel economy you may want to keep a log, writing down the number of gallons you purchase at the pump, and the miles you've driven since your last fill-up. Since running all the way empty can be risky to both you and your engine, I suggest letting the gauge drop to a quarter tank, and then fill-up. This way you can have a standard to base your figures without risking being stranded or messing up your engine by running it dry. No automobile engine should be run completely out of gas as this can cause major problems.

I hope that you can use this information to get the most from your Chevy full-size truck. Given the economic situation today, we might be driving these trucks for a few more years than originally planned. Following these tips will help ensure that your Chevy Silverado lasts as long as you need, and gets the job done for the least cost.

The Romance of Yurt Living, Wildlife Included

When you choose to live with nature in a yurt, it is a marriage: you accept the good with the bad. But even the bad can be great in the springtime! We have only been back in the yurt for a few weeks now, but our encounters with the wildlife have been nothing short of enthralling and amusing.

Last autumn, we closed out our season in the backwoods with a visit from a family of four raccoons, who systematically destroyed every bird feeder we had put up while they scavenged for the last meals of the season. A couple of squirrels determinedly decided to winter in the insulation under the platform deck of the yurt, as well, but we were willing to tolerate them for the four bitter months that we were away from our home.

As spring broke this year, though, we found just what damage a couple of active nut-eaters can do to insulation! Our raccoons have returned, as well. What is unusual is that the family of four remains together, with no new litter of kits in evidence. They announced their return by using their can-opener teeth to puncture a Coleman cooler that I had left outside. For dessert, they gnawed their way into a plastic gas canister, filled with mixed fuel for my chainsaw, and dragged the leaking container across the grass. Given their "finger" dexterity, I am glad I did not leave a barbeque lighter around!

Thirty miles north of us, Hecla Island, in Lake Winnipeg, is the summer home of turkey vultures and a few bald eagles. Rarely has either been spotted away from that area, yet, just as the snow melted from our meadow, a bald eagle pursued a mouse, and landed in the field to finish his lunch. It is just one example of the changing patterns of wildlife in the area. We have two mallard couples nesting in the creek bed not fifty yards from the yurt, sand hill cranes that have relocated their annual nesting area from the adjacent farmland to our small meadow, a grouse sitting on eggs under a three-foot high spruce in a clearing only paces from our home and coyotes that have decided that it is safe to howl, nightly, thirty feet away from where we sleep.

Late in the winter, I encountered a lone black wolf (probably from the Hecla pack) that obviously had strayed form its traditional range twenty-five miles north of us.

My wife is less happy with our annual migrant bear, who has, each spring and fall, travelled along our old riverbed with her latest cub. Two weeks ago, she came up to our doorstep with her cub, demolished a sealed garbage container and dragged one of the bags two hundred yards through our garden before tearing into it. As bold as that action was, she showed that she is less wary of human contact than ever, when she returned, during a rainstorm, to the yurt and rooted around the deck. In the morning, her huge paw prints in the wet clay where I had been excavating provided more than ample evidence of her visit.

Fortunately, our resident skunks and badger have not opted to become emboldened, and move in under the yurt platform!

More humorous that dangerous are the romantic interjections of local wildlife. Our ducks and Canada geese have almost finished their courting, calling, dancing and preening, while the frogs continue to be in great serenading voice. There is nothing quite so mood-destroying, though, as the cooing, gurgling and raucous clucking of crows in love. Their grating calls have all the appeal of a screaming baby. On the other hand, who can turn a deaf ear to the Buddy Rich drumming of a male ruffed grouse at 3:00 a.m?

The best of the strutting males though, has to be one of the many sapsuckers in the woods. For six years, he has chosen to drum his mating song not in nearby trees, but on any metal that he can find. Six years ago, it was my old Cockshutt tractor. Then, he found a better sound with an empty 45-gallon steel drum. Last year, it was the tin bonnet on my old camper. This morning, though, he reached the apex of quality music when he found that the roof of our new Prius provided the melody that he wanted.

It is there that I draw the line at passive interaction with nature. Tomorrow morning, I expect to join him with a few well-directed tennis balls to divert his attention from his new $30,000 toy! I expect, however, that, with the abundance of empty containers and old iron in the yard, it will be only moments before our rock-star drummer finds a new beat with which to lure his mate.

Helping You to Choose the Right Portable, Rigid, Folding or Inflatable Kayak

It's tough choosing a kayak especially your first kayak and there are a lot of questions that need to be explored and answered like: What is the right style or design for you? Pricing out what you can really afford? What type of kayaking are you going to be doing most of the time? The intent of this article is to help you make a good choice based on your research while you are shopping for your kayak. Here are a few guide lines and tips to follow, so let's get started....

First you need to know all the basic construction categories you will run into. There are basically three types of kayak structural classifications:

1. Hard Shell or Rigid kayaks, which can be made up of either:

· plastic,

· fiberglass,

· Kevlar,

· carbon fiber

· Wood.

2. Folding kayaks.

3. Inflatable kayaks.

The rigid (hard shell) kayak is what most people think of when they hear the word kayak. Of the various Hard Shell models, a plastic kayak is usually the least expensive but also can be the heaviest. They are usually tough and can take the abuse, but if they get damaged, they are very difficult to repair if at all.

A fiberglass Kayak will be a much more expensive model than a plastic model, but is significantly lighter. Fiberglass can be easier to damage, but can also be easier to repair (can be expensive) compare to the plastic version.

Composite types such as Kevlar, graphite and carbon fiber kayaks will be even more expensive and lighter still and more costly to repair once damaged then the other two mentioned already.

Wooden kayaks are the original and hand-made quality model. A smooth, warm wood kayak can be a beautiful thing. The prices on wood boats vary considerably. They are easy to repair but do require lots of routine maintenance like an ordinary boat would. Need to be stored properly and the quality can vary as well - depending on the craftsmanship.

Folding kayaks offer the advantage of easy portability and storage. A folding kayak is a collapsible - made of fabric stretched over usually an aluminum frame - but that can vary. Their price is on the expensive side when comparing kayak prices, but they tend to last longer than a typical hard-shell and their resale price usually remains reasonable (depends on the care it received over the years).

They are tough, flexible, stable and seaworthy, but the general consensus is that they lack a bit of the speed and performance vs. a hard-shell. Like wooden kayaks, folding kayaks bring a sense of the past North American native culture to them.

Now Inflatable kayaks offer the best portability of all the models and ease of storage.

They can be the least expensive kayaking option - especially when you consider all the options like storage, portability and maintainability. Thousands of people have been using inflatable kayaks for years and have grown to appreciate how easy they are to get them into the water and back out. After it dries off, how easy it is to store them in your boat carry storage bag which then can be put in either the trunk of your car or once home in a storage closet. Inflatable Kayaks have come a long way and are very sturdy and safe to us. Both US Coast Guard and various rescue crews have used inflatable boats and kayaks for years.

But, as important as the structural makeup of the kayak is, kayaks are typically classified to the type of kayaking they're designed to do. Kayaks built for touring are much different from those for whitewater paddling. There isn't any single kayak that will excel in every type of paddling category. As you shop for your kayak, you need to anticipate your future paddling style and then select a kayak that should perform well in that primary kayak category but also keep in mind your skill level and price range as well. Now there are kayaks out there - especially in the inflatable kayak category that lends itself better to multiple styles/designs then their counter parts. So if you are not sure if you will be using your kayak in any one particular category, consider some high quality companies like Sea Eagle, Innova, Airis and Advance Elements to name a few who use a lot of cross over inflatable kayaks to fit multiple needs. But keep in mind that they will not excel in all categories, they still focus on one particular category but do well in other categories better then most. So focus still on a particular category.

What kind of kayaking will you be doing?

You want to get a kayak that is well-suited for the type of kayaking you plan on doing most of the time. This is one of the most important factors you'll need to consider; to determine what kind of paddling you will be doing and how often you will be doing it - White-Water (how advance), Touring, fishing, only ocean kayaking or just casual kayaking. There will be times you will try to do all three but just be cautious - especially if you start out with casual kayaking and then decide to go to Category IV Whitewater kayaking - make sure your kayak can handle Advance Whitewater kayaking. If you are a beginner or your skill level is not where you want it to be perhaps start out with a kayak that is geared to a more causal kayaking style/design with perhaps the rating to handle a mild to moderate whitewater level so as your skill levels improve you have a kayak that will get you to that level. When you get to the more seasoned pro level then trade it in for a kayak that can handle some serious white water rapids.

Your experience as a kayaker Counts

An experienced kayaker when shopping for their kayak, will most likely look for different qualities in a boat than a beginner kayaker would. An experienced person will usually look for what they call a kayak with good final stability, while the beginner will more or less value good initial stability - less tipsiness. The tipsiness that is normal for all kayaks with low initial stability makes beginners uncomfortable and shy away, but it is this tipsiness that generally indicates a kayak has greater final stability, something advanced kayakers value when they're handling bigger waves. [Further clarification on stability: Initial stability is the tendency of the kayak to lean or shift away from an upright position. Final stability is the tendency of the boat to actually tip over. A boat with good final stability that seems tippy will be more forgiving by staying in a leaning position instead of tipping over. A boat can't have both good initial stability and good final stability - it's pretty much one or the other. The hull shape will determine what kind of stability the boat has. Another issue with stability is its comparison to speed. A highly stable kayak will usually not be the faster kayak on the water. Typically, the stable kayak will be wider and slower than the narrower faster kayak].

An experienced kayaker more or less prefer a tighter cockpit, while a beginner will usually prefer a larger one making it easier to get in and out of the kayak. Still other beginners may be concerned about either escaping from a tipped-over kayak or being forced to successfully perform what is referred to as an Eskimo roll in order to get back above the surface. If this is a concern, then perhaps a sit-on-top model with a recessed seat and foot-wells may be a great choice or perhaps going with an inflatable kayak which have multiple air chambers for redundancy which results in greater stability than rigid kayaks. With more stability, unlike rigid kayaks, inflatable kayaks are very easy to get into from the water and less tendency to capsize in difficult paddling conditions.

Need to consider - Storability, Portability and Weight

It's a known fact that kayaks are going to be out of the water more than in the water, and so you will need to think about how to store your kayak, transport it, and how you are going to get it in and out of the water. If this is another big concern, then a portable and/or good-quality inflatable kayak would be the perfect option. Another option would be to purchase the lightest/smallest hard shell you can afford.

Need to decide: one person (solo) or two person, cargo capacity and/or comfort

There are one person kayaks and there are two person kayaks. They both have their advantages. A two person kayak can be perfect for couples and families. Kayakers of different skill levels and ages can pair up so that everyone can join and not be left behind. Here you can turn a kayak adventure into a fun family adventure. Two person kayaks are fast and stable, but will lack some of the maneuverability of a solo kayak. Also, purchasing risk come into play when buying double vs. solo kayak. Make sure that your kayaking partner is as enthused and motivated as you are with kayaking. Don't find out afterward that you are the only real enthusiast because a neglected 2-person kayak hanging in the back of a lonesome garage is not a pretty sight nor is constantly seeing your 2 person kayak carry bag taking up space in your car trunk.

If you decide on a single (solo), make sure that it has enough storage capacity for whatever gear you are going to need and bring along. Space shouldn't be much of an issue for just afternoon kayaking, but if you're going to take long trips with your kayak (camping/fishing), adequate cargo capacity must be available.

Don't forget about your seating needs you want it to be comfortable and supportive. Whitewater kayakers prefer a snug fit, while touring kayakers prefer something with more room, allowing room to stretch and change positions on longer trips. Check out kayaks that come with upgrade seating if you can afford it.

Available Options

A spray skirt, deck fittings, flotation bags and a handy holder for your water bottle are all

options to consider. Having the right options can make a difference in your kayaking enjoyment.

An important option to consider is a rudder. There are pros and cons about the necessity of having a rudder. A beginner would consider having one while the advance kayaker won't. The argument is, if a rudder helps, then use it. Most would agree, that in certain conditions, such as when strong winds and waves are unrelenting, that a rudder should provide just the right amount of course correction necessary to allow the paddler to focus more on their stroke or the scenery instead of their tracking which is what the rudder or skeg improves upon.

Price

Last but not least pricing - the other most important factors. After you have decided on what style of kayak to purchase, price will be the biggest factor in determining exactly which model to buy (what you can really afford). An entry-level plastic kayak can be as low as $350. Other plastic models can run as high as $1800. Fiberglass boats will cost from about $1000 to $3000. Other more exotic composite boats will cost as much or possibly even more. Inflatable boats can start at about $200 and go up to $2000. Folding boats will set you back $1250 for an entry-level boat and up to $4500 for a top-notch two-some. There are some really good inflatable kayak manufactures and some of the best are Sea Eagle, Innova Kayaks, and Advance Elements.

Point to Remember:

One more thought. Inflatable boats and kayaks have been around for a while - your Coast Guard and search and rescue people use them all the time... So don't shy away from them. But like any boat or kayak you buy, common sense must always come into play. Join the thousands already enjoying their inflatable kayak and boat. Always remember to wear your Life Jackets when out on the water.
